Why Patient Involvement?
Patients are directly affected by the outcomes of the research and development (R&D) of medicines and other health technologies. They also possess unique experience of living with a condition and can provide valuable insights in different stages of the development of adequate and effective health technologies.
Involving patients in the health innovation process benefits all stakeholders. It ensures relevant research priorities & methods from the outset, improves clinical trial recruitment & retention and results in therapies and health interventions that are better tailored to patients’ needs. This saves time, budget and resources not only for developers and payers but for the overall health system in general – everyone wins!
The Challenges
-
PATIENTS LACK KNOW-HOW
Patients may not have the knowledge, skills or tools to get involved
-
RESEARCHERS LACK KNOW-HOW
Researchers may not know how to identify/involve patients
-
LACK OF CONNECTION
Patients and Researchers may not know how to find each other and collaborate.
EUPATI's solution
EUPATI is enhancing patient involvement by providing information, education, and opportunities for collaboration for patients and researchers throughout all aspects of the health innovation ecosystem.
Patient Involvement in medicines research & development
There are many ways for patients to engage in the health innovation ecosystem. The Patient Involvement Roadmap, created by EUPATI, demonstrates the multitude of opportunities for patients to participate. Opportunities are present throughout the whole lifecycle of a health technology, from the initial stages of setting research priorities right up to dissemination, communication and the post-approval phase (the latter covering further R&D, HTA, pharmacovigilance, epidemiology etc).

Patient Involvement in medical device development
In addition to the EUPATI Patient Involvement Roadmap, EUPATI has created a dedicated roadmap for medical devices. This roadmap highlights the various opportunities for patient and public engagement at every stage of medical device development, from innovation and assessment to implementation and evaluation.
